acorn  n. The fruit of the oak,a one-seeded nut.

While I was out checking out various garden centers, I came across the "mother" of all acorns.  It's huge - about 2 feet long and 18 inches wide - and made of fiberglass.  I fell in love with it and acquired it.  I should mention at this time, that squirrels are probably my least favorite mammal and I guess in trying to justifying getting this oversized nut I thought in some warped way that perhaps it would scare them out of my yard once and for all.  I was, for a brief moment, actually thinking of getting a whole mess of these monsters to scatter throughout my lawn.

Anyways, instead it has found a home close to my stoop, accenting an old crock overflowing with ornamental cabbages.   I continued the oversized look in a nearby windowbox.   I gathered from indoors all of my baskets of dried baby's breath - it was getting kind of old, so into the window box the baby's breath went.  I also had, as an experiment, dried some of that very aggressive wild bamboo from my yard.  It dried beautifully and now, these 4 foot long branches got placed in a fan-shape across the back of the box.  Back out to the yard, I gathered long, rust-colored, plumes of astilbe and branches of yellow/red berried bittersweet.  My windowbox is bursting now with just enough room left for some tiny pumpkins and gourds.

The door got a new wreath as well, a simple grapevine with a dozen or so brilliantly colored birds attached.  They kind of look like they are attacking the door trying to get in.  Hope the squirrels don't get any ideas.....
