SPRING ?!?!

Here it is the first week of April and we are still taking tiny baby steps into spring.  I did hear a weather report this morning stating that we will feel 70 degrees in a few short days.  My gosh, I hope they are right.  Though it has been in the 50's and sunny the last couple of days - there has still been a chilly wind with it.

Today, I am taking in my window boxes which have finally been emptied of balsam branches and red bows.  The soil in them is very cold; partially frozen.  They are inside for thawing and to have new potting soil and perilite added as needed.  These boxes will all be hanging from high places so I have chosen nasturium, morning glory, scarlet runner bean, and thunbergia (black-eyed susan vine) seeds to start.   These will eventually trail 3-6 feet.  I normally direct seed into these boxes when the weather is warm in mid-May.  This snowy winter and chilly start to spring have me anxious to get an early start.  With these boxes all together, it will be easier to maintain for the first crucial weeks of germination.  They will sit in front of my huge basement window.  There's a door close by so I can easily put them outside on those 70 degree days when they finally come!

It's hard to believe that my crocuses haven't even bloomed yet.  They are just popping up.  So far, all I've had is a singular snow drop bloom.  Each day I look for it and treasure it.  The daffodils and hyacinths also have been very slow to show themselves.  Not a hint of any tulips  which is just as well - no need to go out and spray deer repellents yet.

It is warm and sunny enough to hang some laundry out today and in one more week?!?! who knows what treasures will be found?!?!
